Following two disappointing losses to the Panthers and Saints, the 49ers got back to their winning ways in the country’s capitol. The 49ers dismantled the Washington Redskins 27-6, to move to 7-4 and keep themselves in the playoff picture. With a struggling passing game in the previous two weeks, it was not the 49ers Achilles heel in week 12. 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, threw for three touchdown passes and posted 235 passing yards, completely outplaying his counterpart, Robert Griffin III. This performance from the 49ers passing game was refreshing, as it has been all too absent this season. While they are still the 32rd ranked unit in the NFL, it was reassuring to see Kaepernick and his receivers this past weekend. This was a key win for the 49ers. They halted their losing streak in an extremely competitive NFC, while gaining momentum in the final stretch of the season.
There are a few reasons for 49ers fans to keep the faith. First, with five games left in the season, three of them will be played in the friendly confines of Candlestick. Second, they will face their division foes, giving them the opportunity to gain ground on the 1st place Seahawks and pull away from the Cardinals and Rams. Second, there’s the return of Michael Crabtree. After a breakout season last year, in which Crabtree emerged as an elite receiver in the NFL, he was sidelined this summer after tearing his Achilles tendon. After missing the first twelve weeks of the season, the 49ers announced that Crabtree would return to the field in week thirteen against the Saint Louis Rams.
With the resurgence of the team’s passing game and the return of their number one receiver, the 49ers may finally live up to all the hype they received during the off-season. Kaepernick will have numerous targets downfield. If he can create plays, the opposition will find it hard to contain this passing game when there are so many dangerous playmakers on the field. Along with Crabtree, fellow receiver Anquan Boldin, and tight end Vernon Davis, are all viable targets in the passing game. If they are on, the 49ers offense will be difficult to stop.
Look for the 49ers resurgent passing game to elevate them to the next level in the final five weeks of the season and into the playoffs.
