GSP Vs Hendricks Fight Preview

Johnny Hendricks has certainly looked impressive in most of his fights and he has proven himself to be quite dangerous with his one-punch knock out power, we at Bay Sports Report predict that this fight will be another boring GSP lay and pray victory. This match is probably more over hyped than it should be. Now we will take a look at the components where GSP or Hendricks are expected to have the advantage

Striking: GSP. Sure Johnny Hendricks has had more impressive victories with his one hit knock out punch. But that’s all he has, a hard left cross. In interviews Hendrick’s always says I just need to hit his chin with my left hand once and that’s it. Certainly, he probably can knockout GSP if he can land that hard left, but if Hendrick’s is just going to rely on landing the one punch KO he is in for a long night. Boxing coaches often tell their fighters to never look for the KO but rather to focus on the “hit and don’t get hit aspect of the game” and if the knockout comes it comes because often  fighters who look for the KO end up getting knockout themselves ie, Pacquiao.  When fighters focus only on going for the KO they tend sacrifice technique, defense and get countered because of their sloppiness. Other than the left punch Johnny Hendricks doesn’t seem to have much in his striking arsenal. The rest of his standup game is pretty average.

GSP, doesn’t have the most exciting or impressive stand up game but he is a great strategist. He has one of the most accurate strikers in the UFC and also has one of the best striking defenses in the UFC as well. GSP is well aware of Hendricks’ left hand and will probably keep move around and keep Hendricks at a distance with his jab and superman punch like he always does. GSP rarely takes risks in the striking aspect of his game and he probably wont take much risk tonight either.

Wrestling: Even, Johnny Hendricks was quite an impressive wrestler winning multiple wrestling championships back at Oklahoma State under Olympic Gold medal wrestling coach John Smith. For this camp Hendricks has reunited with John Smith. It is reasonable to expect that GSP won’t take him down as easily as he did in his fights against Condit and Nick Diaz

GSP on the other hand  didn’t go to college but his wrestling has been impressive against great college wrestlers such as Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Matt Hughes. I don’t expect either guy to be dominant on the ground

Speed and conditioning: GSP. GSP has more experience in 5 round fights than Johnny Hendricks. GSP almost never get tired in the ring and this is because of his brutal workout regimen that involves training gymnastics with the Canadian gymnastics team. But all kidding aside, we’ve seen Johnny Hendrick’s get tired and his style of throwing 100% power punches will exhaust him if the fight goes 5 rounds. GSP has a pretty conservative style that combined with his athleticism will allow him to remain fresh for 5 rounds.

How the fight will probably play out: GSP will pop his jab and superman punch throughout the fight and Hendricks will miss the majority of his power shots and maybe land a couple jabs or strikes in the inside clinch. Eventually, Hendriks will get frustrated and tired  from missing his power shots and GSP will begin working his take downs or holding up Johnny Hendriks against the fence. GSP will also probably keep the fight standing while and moving away from Hendrick”s left hand and then work a takedown in the last 10 seconds of the fight go win on points

Prediction: GSP wins 4 rounds to 1 (49-46)
