Ottawa, Ontario, Canada–Today the San Jose Sharks will take on the Ottawa Senators in Canada’s nation capital as they complete their first back to back set of the season. When these two clubs last faced one another, the Sharks defeated the Senators by a 3-2 final. The Sharks have won their last six of seven games against the Sens that includes a 3-0 victory in Ottawa at the Canada Tire Centre.
Yesterday in Montreal, the Sharks beat the Canadians courtesy of two Logan Couture goals, one of the power play and the other at even strength to defeat the Habs 2-0. Currently San Jose is leading the league with 19 points at a 9-1-1 record and is a plus 25 in the goal differential outscoring their opponents 43 to 18. The Sharks have five players on the roster with double digit points, Patrick Marleau (14), Logan Couture (13), Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski with (12), and Tomas Hertl at (10).
Antti Niemi is leading the NHL among goaltenders with nine wins and two shutouts. Niemi is currently ranked at number five among goalies at 1.53 GAA and 11th in save percentage at .933.
Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic is leading the charge in the National Hockey League in plus/minus at +10. Their road record going in today’s contest against the Senators is 4-1-1. Overall, San Jose’s plus/minus rating is at +84. They are still averaging a solid goal for average at 3.82 and a goal against average at 1.54.
For the hosts of the day, Ottawa is coming off of a 2-1 loss vs. the Ducks on Friday night as Anaheim beat the Senators 2-0 on a two game season series. Jason Spezza is the only member of his club in double digits as far as points at 10 and is -3. Jason Spezza and Bobby Ryan are leading Ottawa in goals scored at 7 and 6 respectively. Their record as of today has them at 4-4-2 in the Atlantic Division with 10 points. Senators net minder Craig Anderson is sitting right inside the top 15 among goalies in save percentage at .930 with a 4-2-2 record.
San Jose is in 3rd in the penalty kill department at 87.1%, while the Senators are three spots behind in sixth with 84.6%. As for power play duties, the Sharks are sitting in the eight spot at 23.1% and Ottawa is all the way down at 17th at 19.4%.
