From a defensive standpoint, the San Francisco 49ers have looked convincingly solid in the past couple of games; considering the fact that many of their starters have been going through injuries lately. In the cornerback department, (CB) Nnamdi Asomugha is still nursing an unfortunate right knee injury, while (CB) Tramaine Brock is “performing” at a competitive level that far exceeds Asomugha’s usual production on the field. After Brock’s sensational performance against the Texans (2 interceptions), is Asomugha now considered an obsolete alternative at cornerback? After week 6, the former Buccaneer (CB) Eric Wright will now have the opportunity to compete for the (No.3) cornerback position, after he’s been activated off the reserve/non-football injury list. This incredible defensive depth provides the explanation “why” the Niners are the best 2nd ranked pass-defense in the NFL league today.
(CB) Eric Wright stands at (5’10, 200lbs.), his ability to the shut down wide receivers has been his staple trademark, much like (CB) Darrelle Revis and Asomugha (during his Pro-Bowl Raider days). The (2007) 2nd round-pick was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, he recorded a total of 249 tackles, 1 sack, and 9 interceptions during his four glorious seasons at the state of Ohio. Discernibly, a player of this “caliber” wouldn’t be overlooked during the free-agency period, so he spent one season with the Detroit Lions and another as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. The former UNLV “Beauregard” did have some off field issues regarding DUI charges and “performance-enhancement drugs”. His complications off the field can be a hindrance to the 49er organization, just like (OLB) Aldon Smith who has now been charged with three felony counts (illegal weapon possession). Alarmingly enough, the former “Buc” did receive a chance to redeem himself with the 49ers, let’s hope the legal matters remain quiet for the time-being.
Asomugha production on the field has been slowly deteriorating, especially during his days as a Philadelphia “Eagle”. Is age finally getting to the former Pro Bowler? If so, then Wright will remain the #1 favorite to win the (No.3) cornerback roster spot. Nonetheless, if Asomugha can make a statement that he hasn’t lost a step in his coverage capability, then anything can happen.
