New Orleans Saints Super Bowl hero Tracy Porter has been a big addition for the Oakland Raiders so far this season. Last season, the Raiders defensive backs were so atrocious that Dennis Allen was not able to run his aggressive hybrid scheme. Now that general manager has signed Porter, Malcom Jenkins, Charles Woodson and drafted DJ Hayden; the Raiders have been much more aggressive on defense.
The Raiders had their best defensive performance in a long time as they shut down the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars offense. Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver was calling aggressive blitzes to help stop the run and force 5 sacks.
Porter has primarily lined up as a nickel back which has put him on an island with receivers. Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne tried to throw a deep pass to Cecil Shorts but Porter knocked the ball away with ease. Although Porter did not create any turnovers he did finish the game with 3 pass deflections.
Now that the Raiders are creating quarterback pressure, expect Tracy Porter get his fair share of interceptions.
Next Monday’s game will be the first big test for the new look Raiders secondary as they prepare to play Peyton Manning and the potent Broncos passing attack. Although Cecil Shorts is a decent wide receiver, he is not in the same category as Wes Welker.
Porter will have extra motivation to play the Broncos because he played with them last season. Hopefully, Porter has gotten used to covering the Broncos receivers because of all the practice time he had with them. There is also the fact that Porter owns Peyton Manning because of the big interception return for a touchdown that he had against the Colts in the Super Bowl.
Reggie McKenzie took some flak for signing a bunch defensive players to one-year contracts this off-season. However, Tracy Porter’s resurgence has shown that these players are playing hungrier than ever.
