San Jose Giants First Baseman Ricky Oropesa, drafted in the third round out of USC in 2011, started the year in AA Richmond before unfortunately being demoted half way through the season back down to San Jose due to a slump in which he only hit around .200. However, since Oropesa’s stint back in San Jose, he has been ripping the ball, hitting .307 with 8 homeruns and 38 RBI with a .380 OBP. We asked him what he can attribute to his new found success in San Jose. Oropesa replied with:
“The biggest thing was just getting in my grove with the bat. I haven’t really changed much with my swing; it was more of a confidence thing really.”
Oropesa can rake, and with him it is just about finding his confidence in his swing. He can hit for power to both right and left field, and he actually hit a shot of a homerun after we interviewed him. This guy can hit a fastball as well as anyone in the CAL League. Oropesa is not listed on the top twenty prospects for the San Francisco Giants, but he will move up the ladder pretty quickly if he continues hitting like this. Expect him to start the season in Richmond next season, and if he has success there is a possibility that you could see him in a Giants uniform by the end of 2014.
Again, we’d really like to thank Ricky and the San Jose Giants for allowing us to sit down with him for a few minutes, and we wish him success throughout his career.
