Dan Straily is an important member of the Oakland A’s future, although the numbers may not show it. He is only 24 years old, and has scorched through Triple A ball and is trying to prove his worth to the city and to his teammates but no pitcher in the American League can win a game by himself. Oakland needs their offense to come alive now more than ever
Straily is 0-5 in his last 6 starts, but he is averaging less than one run a game in run support during that stretch. Tonight wasn’t his most solid start but it wasn’t terrible by any means. He gave up 3 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings but he struck out 7 batters. And in the time he was pitching his team got a grand total of 0 hits. Oakland didn’t register their first hit until Josh Donaldson’s RBI single in the bottom of the 6th.
Does anyone ever expect Oakland to showcase their offensive talent every night? No. But maybe next week they can share the love and drop 10 runs for Straily for once. Whether Bob Melvin decides to keep Straily on for another chance or he gets sent back down, this will in no way be his last shot at pitching in the big leagues. But no pitcher is going to be happy having to shut out the opponent night after night in order to get a shot at a win.
The kid could use a break, especially with Colon’s stock falling after being put on the DL, and Milone being brought up fighting for a starting spot as well. Milone is getting his shot for redemption after being destroyed by the Rangers his last run out, and the A’s need the win as they fell to 1 ½ games back again tonight.
