The Oakland Athletics are once again in a dogfight with the Texas Rangers in the AL West. It looks like the chase to win the AL West will come down to the finals days. The A’s can’t count on a Josh Hamilton dropped ball to win it this year though. Every game should be treated like a must win over the next month-and-a-half, especially the games against the lowly Houston Astros.
Right now the A’s are 1 game back in the AL West race with 45 games left in the season. Fortunately for the A’s, they have 7 games left with their favorite opponent the Astros, while the Ranger have 6 games left with the Astros. The A’s must find a way to win all 7 games against the Astros starting with tonight’s game. Yesterday the Astros nearly had a perfect game thrown against them, so they can’t come into the series much colder. This 3 game series provides A’s hitters a chance to heat up their bats against Houston’s atrocious pitching staff. In Josh Reddick’s case it will allow him to keep up his torrid pace that he had in Toronto.
If the A’s can keep pace with the Rangers in August, they will have a good chance of passing the Rangers in September when the A’s have a softer schedule. Thursday’s game also offers rookie pitcher Sonny Gray a chance to pick up his first big league win, which could boost his confidence for the playoff run. It all starts tonight as the veteran Bartolo Colon must find a way to finish off the Astros.
