Previously on day 13 of San Francisco 49ers training camp, Colin Kaepernick put on an offensive show. On day 14, the 49ers’ defense dominated the practice field. Kaepernick was sacked five times, rookie cornerback Marcus Cooper intercepted Kaepernick on a pass intended for Kyle Williams, and rookie cornerback Darryl Morris defended two Kaepernick passes to A.J. Jenkins. Fellow rookie Lawrence Okoye seemed to pick up the game a bit more, getting decent penetration on a pass-rush and also batting down a Colt McCoy pass.
While those defensive rookies stood out at practice, the 49ers’ starting secondary had a field day with quarterback B.J. Daniels, whose hopes of competing for the #2 quarterback spot took a serious blow. Cornerback Tarell Brown, returning from injury, broke up two passes and intercepted Daniels twice. Safety Donte Whitner and cornerback Perrish Cox also picked off Daniels.
The 49ers’ linebackers also had a strong showing at this practice. Nate Stupar defended 3 passes, Corey Lemonier and Cam Johnson performed well against Kenny Wiggins and Patrick Omameh, and Nick Moody worked with the first-team defense.
While the defensive unit vigorously attacked the ball, tight end Vernon Davis shined as well, catching 7 passes in 11-on-11 drills. Many of the wide receivers had a productive day alongside Davis. Austin Collie caught two passes, Marlon Moore caught a 40-yard pass from Kaepernick, and Ricardo Lockette was solid. Nine wide receivers caught passes at this day of practice, including Quinton Patton’s two one-handed receptions, while Jenkins caught none.
Jenkins and Lavelle Hawkins were the only receivers to strike out at day 14 of training camp. Since his fumble in the preseason game against the Denver Broncos, Jenkins’ opportunity for success with the 49ers seems to have weakened, with the young receiver getting fewer snaps the past couple of days at camp. As his snaps and production have gone down, the snaps for Williams, Kassim Osgood, Collie, and Hawkins have gone up. Will Jenkins make the final 53-man roster?
Lineman Adam Snyder, practicing in place of Joe Staley, did not have a good practice either, giving up sacks to Justin Smith and Ahmad Brooks. Staley was not the only player to miss practice due to injury. Cornerback Carlos Rogers also sat out, as did Vance McDonald, Jewel Hampton, Bubba Ventrone, Chris Culliver, and Patrick Willis.
