Undrafted rookie quarterback Matt McGloin has defied expectations his whole life, so it is no surprise that he is pushing for a roster spot during training camp. After a stellar high school career, McGloin was not offered a single college football scholarship so he decided to walk-on to Penn State to prove critics wrong. By the end of his senior year with the Nittany Lions, McGloin was the career passing touchdowns leader in Penn States illustrious history. McGloin was once again overlooked as he was not even invited to the NFL combine, in a weak quarterback draft. While some players would become bitter after being overlooked throughout their lives, McGloin has used it as motivation to improve his game.
McGloin looked impressive in mini-camp but many thought he would be nothing more than a camp arm for the Oakland Raiders because of the presence of Terrelle Pryor, Matt Flynn and Tyler Wilson. However, McGloin has continued to improve during training camp and has even surpassed 4th round pick Tyler Wilson on the depth chart. If McGloin continues his torrid pace it will be hard for the Raiders brass to let him go but whose roster spot would he take?
The easy answer to the McGloin conundrum would be to place him on the practice squad. However, all 32 NFL teams are looking for a good young arm to mold, so there is no guarantee McGloin would clear waivers. Another solution would be to trade versatile quarterback Terrelle Pryor to a team that runs the read-option. While Pryor has shown that he has improved as a passer this year, he has never been Reggie McKenzie’s guy. If another team was willing to give up a mid-level draft pick next year, McKenzie would jump at the opportunity, especially if it meant keeping McGloin on the roster.
It still remains to be seen if McGloin can keep up the pace but no one should doubt that the gritty Scranton kid could make the roster. McGloin could be another scrappy player that the Raider nation falls in love with as he is in the same mold as fellow western Pennsylvanian Bruce Gradkowski. McGloin is the type of player that can lead the Raiders into a new era.
